What is outbound sales?
Selling by reaching out first to people who haven't contacted you, through cold email, calls or social messages.
Definition
Outbound sales is selling by reaching out first to people who have not contacted you, through cold email, cold calls, LinkedIn messages or other channels. The seller chooses the target accounts, starts the conversation and creates demand, instead of waiting for buyers to find them through ads, search or referrals.
How outbound works
- Define who to target. Write down your ideal customer profile: industry, size, roles, location.
- Build a list. Find matching companies and people, and verify their contact details.
- Find a reason to reach out. A trigger such as new funding, hiring or a job change makes the message relevant.
- Run a sequence. Send a first message and a few spaced follow-ups across email and social.
- Hand off. When someone replies with interest, qualify them and book a call.
Outbound vs inbound
In inbound sales, buyers come to you, so they are already looking and conversion is higher, but you can't control volume or who shows up. In outbound, you choose exactly who to talk to and can start tomorrow, but most people you contact weren't planning to buy. Most B2B teams run both: inbound for demand that exists, outbound to reach the accounts they want most.
An example
Say you sell bookkeeping services to US e-commerce brands with 10 to 50 employees. You build a list of 300 founders and heads of finance, filter for brands that posted a finance job in the last month, and send a short email that mentions the hire. If 18 people reply and 6 agree to a call, those 6 conversations came from accounts you picked, not from whoever happened to find your website. These numbers are illustrative; your results depend on list quality and offer.
Common mistakes
- Sending one generic message to a huge, unfiltered list.
- Skipping email verification, which raises bounces and hurts deliverability.
- Giving up after one message, or following up so often it becomes spam.
- Pitching in the first line instead of giving a reason to talk.

Questions
Is outbound sales still effective?
Yes, when it is targeted. Outbound works best with a tight customer profile, a verified list, a clear reason for reaching out and a few well-spaced follow-ups. Mass, generic outreach performs poorly and can damage your email domain's reputation with mailbox providers.
What is the difference between outbound and inbound sales?
In outbound sales, the seller contacts prospects first, usually through cold email, calls or social messages. In inbound sales, prospects contact the seller first, through a form, demo request, chat or trial. Outbound gives you control over who you reach; inbound brings buyers who are already looking.
What roles do outbound sales?
Outbound prospecting is usually done by SDRs or BDRs, who research accounts, send outreach and book meetings for account executives. At small companies, founders often do it themselves, and some teams use AI SDR tools to handle list building and first-touch outreach.
