The short answer

A cold email that gets replies is short (under 120 words), opens with something specific about the recipient, names one problem they likely have, offers one piece of proof, and ends with an easy question rather than a demand for a meeting. The subject line should look like a colleague wrote it: a few lowercase words, no hype.

  • One reason to write. A trigger (new role, hiring, launch) or a problem their peers have. Put it in the first line.
  • Under 120 words. If it needs scrolling on a phone, it's too long.
  • One piece of proof. A result, a customer like them, a number. Not a feature list.
  • An easy question to close. 'Worth a look?' gets more replies than 'Do you have 30 minutes on Thursday?'
  • Plain subject lines. Two to five lowercase words that look internal: 'question about {topic}'.

Questions

How long should a cold email be?

Under 120 words. Short emails are read on a phone in one screen, and most replies come from emails that make one point and ask one easy question.

What is a good cold email subject line?

Two to five plain, lowercase words that look like an internal email, such as 'question about onboarding' or 'your sales hire'. Avoid hype, emojis and fake 'Re:' prefixes.

How many follow-ups should a cold email sequence have?

Usually two or three follow-ups over two to three weeks, each adding something new, then a polite breakup email.

Is cold emailing legal?

B2B cold email is legal in many countries if you follow local rules, such as identifying yourself, giving a clear way to opt out and honouring it, and having a legitimate interest. Rules differ by country, so check the ones where your recipients are.

Can Siela write and send these for me?

Yes. Siela's AI SDR finds people who fit, verifies their work email, and sends your first email with each person's details filled in, from your own Gmail. AI follow-ups continue in the same thread.
