What is inbound sales?
Selling to people who reach out first, through a form, demo request, chat or trial, so you respond and qualify.
Definition
Inbound sales is selling to people who contact you first, by filling in a form, requesting a demo, starting a chat, replying to content or signing up for a trial. The seller's job is to respond quickly, qualify the lead and help a buyer who is already looking, rather than create interest from scratch.
Where inbound leads come from
- Search. Blog posts, comparison pages and product pages people find on Google or in AI assistants.
- Social. Posts and comments that lead people to your profile or site.
- Referrals. Customers and partners who send people your way.
- Paid. Ads that drive demo requests or sign-ups.
- Events and webinars. Attendees who ask to talk afterward.
How an inbound process works
- Capture. A form or booking page collects name, company and what they need.
- Route. The lead goes to one owner right away.
- Respond. A fast, personal reply. See speed to lead.
- Qualify. Check fit and urgency, by form questions or on a short call.
- Book or nurture. Good-fit leads get a meeting; early ones get useful follow-up until they're ready.
Inbound vs outbound
Inbound leads already have a problem in mind, so they usually convert better and need less convincing. The trade-off is control: you can't choose which companies show up, and volume depends on your content, reputation and ad spend. Outbound fills that gap by reaching the accounts you want, whether or not they found you.
Inbound also needs filtering. Students, job seekers and vendors fill in demo forms too, so qualify before you book a rep's time.
An example
Say you run a recruiting agency and publish a guide on hiring your first salesperson. A founder reads it and books a call through the page. Before the call, you look up their company, see they are 12 people and just raised a seed round, and prepare two questions about their hiring timeline. That is inbound: they came to you, and your job is to be fast, prepared and helpful. Reply the next afternoon with a generic slide deck and you waste the head start they gave you.

Questions
What is an inbound lead?
An inbound lead is a person who contacts your company first, for example by filling in a form, requesting a demo, starting a chat or signing up for a trial. Because they raised their hand, they usually expect a quick, relevant reply and are often further along in their buying process.
Is inbound or outbound better for a small B2B team?
Most small teams need both. Inbound brings buyers who are already looking but grows slowly and is hard to control. Outbound lets you pick target accounts and start right away. Many founders begin with outbound for early customers while building content that drives inbound over time.
