What is lead qualification?

Deciding whether a lead is worth sales time, based on fit, need, timing and ability to buy.

Definition

Lead qualification is the process of deciding whether a lead is worth a salesperson's time, based on how well they fit your ideal customer, whether they have a real need, and whether they can buy soon. It sorts leads into ones to pursue now, ones to nurture and ones to drop, so reps spend time where deals are likely.

What you're checking

  • Fit. Do the company and person match your ICP and personas?
  • Need. Do they have the problem you solve, and do they know it?
  • Timing. Is something forcing a decision soon, like a trigger event or a deadline?
  • Ability to buy. Budget, and whether you're talking to someone who can make or shape the decision.

Stages and frameworks

Many teams qualify in two passes. Marketing checks fit and engagement and marks a lead as an MQL. Sales then talks to the lead, confirms need and timing, and turns it into an SQL. Frameworks give reps a checklist: BANT (budget, authority, need, timeline) suits simpler deals, while MEDDIC adds detail on metrics, the decision process and a champion for complex ones. Whatever you use, write the criteria down so marketing, SDRs and account executives apply the same rules.

An example

Say you sell fleet tracking software and two leads come in. A landscaping company with 3 trucks downloads a guide. It's a poor fit and shows no urgency, so it goes to nurture. The operations director of a delivery company with 45 trucks asks for pricing and mentions an insurance renewal in two months. Good fit, clear need, real deadline. That one goes to a rep today. Neither decision needed a long call. A few facts about fit, need and timing were enough to route both.

Common mistakes

  • Qualifying on interest alone. An eager student or a competitor isn't a lead.
  • Turning qualification into an interrogation. Ask a few useful questions and listen.
  • Never disqualifying. Dropping poor fits early is half the value.
  • Qualifying once and never revisiting. A lead that wasn't ready in March may be ready in June after a trigger event.

Questions

What are the main criteria for qualifying a lead?

Most teams check four things: fit with the ideal customer profile, a real need the product solves, timing or urgency, and the ability to buy, meaning budget plus access to a decision-maker. Frameworks like BANT and MEDDIC are structured versions of these checks.

What is the difference between lead qualification and lead scoring?

Lead scoring assigns points or a rating automatically, based on data and behavior. Lead qualification is the broader decision about whether to pursue a lead. It often uses the score as one input, then adds a conversation to confirm need and timing.

Who qualifies leads, marketing or sales?

Often both. Marketing typically does the first pass using fit and engagement data, producing MQLs. Sales, often an SDR, does the second pass through outreach or a short call, confirming need and timing before the lead becomes an SQL and goes to an account executive.
