What is lead enrichment?
Adding missing details to a lead record, like job title, company size, verified email or LinkedIn URL, from outside data sources.
Definition
Lead enrichment is the process of adding missing information to a lead or contact record from outside data sources. Starting from something small, like a name and company or an email address, it fills in details such as job title, company size, industry, location, verified email and social profiles, so the lead can be qualified and contacted.
How lead enrichment works
You send an identifier, such as an email, a LinkedIn URL, a company domain, or a name plus company, to one or more data providers. They match it against their databases and return the fields they have. The results are written back to your CRM or spreadsheet, ideally with the source and date for each field. Providers usually return a value only when they're fairly confident in the match, so expect some fields to stay blank.
Enrichment can run in bulk on an imported list, or in real time, for example when someone fills out a short form and you look up their company before routing the lead.
Fields that usually matter
- Contact. Job title, seniority, verified work email, LinkedIn URL, phone.
- Company. Industry, employee count, revenue range, location, website, tech stack.
- Context. Recent funding, hiring, date of the last job change.
Enrich only what you'll use to qualify, route or personalize. Extra fields cost money and go stale.
An example
Say your demo form asks only for a work email. Someone submits jane@example-bakery.com. Enrichment returns: Head of Operations at a bakery chain with roughly 120 employees and 9 locations in Ohio. That's enough to route her to the right rep, and it lets you drop the five extra form questions that were costing you signups. It also shows she's a decision-maker at a company that fits, so she skips the nurture queue.
Common mistakes
- Trusting enriched emails without verification. Bad addresses raise your bounce rate and hurt deliverability.
- Never re-enriching. People change jobs, so data decays.
- Overwriting details a rep confirmed by hand with a provider's guess.
- Enriching every record. Enrich leads you plan to contact soon, or you'll pay for data that's stale by the time you use it.
How Siela AI uses it
Siela AI verifies email addresses before sending, and its AI SDR saves the leads it finds to the built-in CRM, which also supports CSV import.
Questions
What is the difference between lead enrichment and lead generation?
Lead generation finds new people or companies to contact. Lead enrichment adds details to leads you already have. In practice they often run together: a prospecting tool finds a contact, then enrichment fills in their verified email, title and company details.
How accurate is lead enrichment data?
It varies by provider, region and field. Company details like industry and size tend to be more reliable than personal emails or phone numbers, which change often. Verify emails before sending, and treat any single provider's data as a best guess, not a fact.
How often should you re-enrich leads?
For active prospecting lists, re-enrich before each campaign or at least every few months, because titles and emails go stale as people change roles. Across the whole CRM, many teams refresh key fields on a regular schedule and re-check any record before a rep reaches out.
