What is engagement rate?

A social media metric: interactions such as likes, comments, shares and clicks, divided by impressions, reach or followers.

Definition

Engagement rate is a social media metric that shows how many people interacted with your content, through likes, comments, shares or clicks, relative to how many saw it or follow you. It is usually shown as a percentage and lets you compare posts fairly, whatever the size of the audience.

Common formulas

  • By impressions. Engagements / impressions x 100. Shows how compelling a post was to the people who saw it.
  • By reach. Engagements / unique people reached x 100. Similar, but each viewer counts once.
  • By followers. Engagements / followers x 100. Useful for comparing accounts, but it ignores how many followers actually saw the post.

For social selling, the rate by impressions is usually the most useful, because it shows whether the people who saw a post cared. Use the follower-based rate when comparing your account with others of different sizes.

Platforms and tools calculate it differently

There is no single standard. LinkedIn's Page analytics describes engagement rate as the ratio of interactions to impressions, where interactions include clicks, reactions, comments and shares. Other platforms and third-party tools count different actions, such as saves, profile visits or video views, and some divide by followers. A 4% rate in one tool and 1% in another may describe the same post. Compare only numbers calculated the same way.

An example

Say a LinkedIn post gets 2,000 impressions, 30 reactions, 8 comments, 2 reposts and 20 clicks. That's 60 engagements, so the rate by impressions is 60 / 2,000 = 3%. If the page has 5,000 followers, the rate by followers is 60 / 5,000 = 1.2%. Same post, two different answers. These numbers are illustrative.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing engagement rates across platforms as if they were the same metric.
  • Counting only likes and missing comments and clicks.
  • Chasing engagement on posts that will never reach buyers.
  • Ignoring what happened after: profile visits, messages and meetings.

How Siela AI uses it

Siela's Social Media agent runs LinkedIn and X posting, comments and replies, with a choice of "show me every post first" or "post without asking".

Questions

How do you calculate engagement rate?

The most common formula is total engagements, such as likes, comments, shares and clicks, divided by impressions, times 100. Some tools divide by reach or by followers instead. Pick one formula, use it consistently, and note which one when you compare results.

Why is my engagement rate different in different tools?

Platforms and tools count different actions as engagements and divide by different numbers, such as impressions, reach or followers. LinkedIn's Page analytics, for example, uses interactions per impression. The same post can show different rates, so compare numbers calculated the same way.
