What is account-based marketing?

A B2B strategy that picks specific target companies first, then builds marketing and outreach around each one.

Definition

Account-based marketing (ABM) is a B2B strategy where sales and marketing choose a specific list of target companies and treat each one as a market of its own, with messaging, content and outreach built for that account. Instead of generating lots of leads and filtering them, ABM starts with the accounts you most want to win.

How ABM works

  1. Pick the accounts. Start from your ICP and choose named companies with the best fit and highest value.
  2. Map the buying group. Identify the several people who influence the decision, not just one contact.
  3. Tailor the message. Speak to each account's situation: their industry, recent news, current tools.
  4. Coordinate the touches. Sales and marketing reach the same people through email, LinkedIn, ads and events in a planned order.
  5. Measure by account. Track engagement and pipeline per account, not leads per campaign.

1:1, 1:few and 1:many ABM

  • 1:1 (one-to-one). Fully custom programs for a handful of very high-value accounts: custom research, tailored content, sometimes a dedicated landing page or event.
  • 1:few (one-to-few). Small clusters of similar accounts, say ten logistics companies with the same problem, that share one tailored message.
  • 1:many (one-to-many). Hundreds of accounts targeted with lighter personalization, usually driven by data and automation, such as industry-specific ads and sequences.

Most teams mix tiers: deep work on a few accounts, lighter work on many.

An example

Say you sell fleet safety software and five regional trucking companies would each be worth a year of revenue. You research each one, find the operations lead, the safety manager and the CFO, and send each a short note that references their fleet size and a recent safety rule change. You run LinkedIn ads only to those five companies. Success isn't 500 leads; it's three of the five agreeing to a meeting.

Common mistakes

  • Too many "target" accounts. If the list is 2,000 companies with no tailoring, it's just outbound with a new name.
  • Single-threading. Reaching one person per account leaves the deal fragile. See multi-threading a deal.
  • Sales and marketing working separately. ABM only works when both agree on the list and the plan.

How Siela AI uses it

Siela's AI SDR can target the roles, industries, company sizes and locations you choose, and can flag account-level signals such as a company raising funding or hiring.

Questions

Is ABM only for large companies?

No. Small teams often do a lighter version naturally: a founder picks 20 dream accounts and researches each one before reaching out. The principle is the same. ABM is about focus and relevance, not budget or a specific software tool.

What is the difference between ABM and inbound marketing?

Inbound marketing attracts whoever finds your content and then qualifies them. ABM decides who you want first and goes to them directly with tailored outreach. Many teams use both: inbound for broad demand and ABM for a short list of high-value accounts.
