Which plan does a founder sending under 5,000 emails a month need?
The entry plan of each tool covers that volume: Instantly Growth, Smartlead Base or lemlist Email. Each one's sending allowance is at least 5,000 emails a month, so the choice comes down to price, contact limits and which features sit on the entry tier. Prices are in US dollars from each vendor's pricing page, checked 20 October 2026. The yearly column is the per-month price when you pay for a year.
| Checked 20 Oct 2026 | Instantly Growth | Smartlead Base | lemlist Email |

| Monthly billing | $47 a month | $39 a month | $69 a month |
| Yearly billing, per month | $37.60 | $32 | $55 |
| Sending allowance | 5,000 emails a month | 6,000 sends a month | 50,000 emails a month (smallest Email tier) |
| Contacts | 1,000 uploaded contacts | 2,000 contacts stored | Unlimited contacts |
| Mailboxes and warmup | Unlimited email accounts and warmup | Unlimited email accounts; Foundation-tier warmup pool | Unlimited users and email senders; lemwarm included |

| Lead data | Separate Instantly Credits subscription | Verified prospect emails: $59 a month add-on | Data add-on: $20 a month ($16 yearly) for 2,000 credits |
Over a year on yearly billing, Smartlead Base costs $384 (12 × $32; its plain-text file says $390), Instantly Growth $451.20 (12 × $37.60) and lemlist Email $660 (12 × $55). On monthly billing the same year costs $468, $564 and $828. Sources: Instantly pricing, Smartlead pricing and lemlist pricing.
What does 5,000 emails a month look like?
It is about 167 emails a day if you send every day of a 30-day month, or about 227 per working day across 22 working days (5,000 ÷ 30 and 5,000 ÷ 22). Check the contact allowance as well as the send allowance:
- Three emails per person. A first email and two follow-ups means 5,000 emails reach about 1,667 people (5,000 ÷ 3).
- Instantly Growth allows 1,000 uploaded contacts. At three emails each, 1,000 contacts use 3,000 of the 5,000 emails. To use the full allowance you would send five emails per person.
- Smartlead Base stores 2,000 contacts and allows 6,000 sends a month. Smartlead says the two are separate counters, so the same contact can be emailed several times within the send allowance. Three emails to 2,000 contacts is exactly 6,000.
- lemlist Email lists unlimited contacts. Its smallest tier allows 50,000 emails a month, ten times the volume in this post's title.
You are also far below Google's bulk-sender line. Google's email sender guidelines add extra requirements for anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts. Below that, the requirements for all senders still apply, including SPF or DKIM authentication for your sending domains and a spam rate below 0.3% in Postmaster Tools. Write a short sequence before you pick a tool; our cold email templates and follow-up templates are a starting point.
Which features matter at this volume?
Five things decide whether an entry plan works for a founder: mailboxes, warmup, a place to answer replies, CRM sync and lead data. Price matters less than whether the entry plan has the one feature you need.
- Mailboxes and warmup. All three let you connect as many email accounts as you like and include warmup on the entry plan. lemlist's FAQ says lemwarm is included in all plans. You still pay for the mailboxes themselves: Instantly's plain-text pricing page lists done-for-you Google accounts at $5 a month and domains at $15 a year.
- Answering replies. At 1,000 to 2,000 people a month, replies spread across several mailboxes. Instantly's comparison table ticks Unibox only for Hypergrowth, and its plain-text page calls the Growth version preview-only. lemlist ticks its unified inbox only on Multichannel and Enterprise. Smartlead's pricing page doesn't list its inbox by plan. Where the entry plan has no shared inbox, you answer replies in each mailbox.
- CRM sync. lemlist Email includes CRM integrations and an API. Smartlead's plain-text pricing page says Base does not include API and webhooks, and that Pro is the first tier with CRM access. For Instantly Growth, its two pricing pages disagree.
- Lead data. Each tool sells data separately at this tier. Instantly runs its lead database on a separate Instantly Credits subscription; its pricing page lists Growth Credits at $47 a month for 1,500 credits. Smartlead charges $59 a month for verified prospect emails on Base. lemlist's data add-on is $20 a month for 2,000 credits, which it says covers 400 emails or 100 phone numbers.
- Automation. Instantly's plain-text pricing page says its Automation Builder is included on all Outreach plans at no extra cost.
Where do the pricing pages disagree with themselves?
Two of the three pricing pages contradict themselves. As of 20 October 2026:
- Instantly Growth features. The comparison table on the pricing page leaves Growth unticked for advanced warmup, invite team members, global block list, A/Z testing, Unibox and API, webhooks and integrations. The plain-text pricing page that it links for AI agents says Growth includes basic A/Z testing, advanced warmup options and a preview-only Unibox, and that all plans include API access, with webhooks from Hypergrowth up.
- Smartlead's yearly price. The Base card shows $32 a month on yearly billing. Smartlead's plain-text pricing file, dated 28 July 2026, lists $32.50 a month or $390 a year. The FAQ says annual billing saves 17%.
If one of these features decides your choice, ask the vendor's support to confirm it in writing for your plan, or test it during the free trial.
What does each tool do well?
Each one is a reasonable choice for a different founder. As each vendor describes it, checked 20 October 2026:
- Instantly. Unlimited email accounts and warmup on the $47 plan. Its plain-text pricing page describes a 14-day free trial with no card that includes 250 uploaded contacts and 1,000 emails, and says that when you outgrow a plan you move up a tier instead of paying overage. The next tier, Hypergrowth, is $97 a month ($77.60 yearly); its card lists 125,000 emails, while the comparison table says 100,000.
- Smartlead. The lowest entry price of the three, with more contacts and sends than Instantly Growth at the entry tier. Smartlead says it rotates sending across all connected mailboxes in a campaign, offers monthly or annual plans with no lock-in, and includes a free trial with no credit card. Its page also offers 50% off the first month for new sign-ups.
- lemlist. Unlimited users and email senders on the Email plan, plus CRM integrations, an API and lemwarm. lemlist says its database holds 650M+ leads. If you add LinkedIn later, Multichannel is $109 a user a month ($87 yearly) with 5 senders per user. Its FAQ describes a 14-day trial with Multichannel features and 200 free credits.
Which one should you pick?
Pick by the job you need done, then check that one feature on the entry plan:
- You want the lowest cost for one founder sending email only: Smartlead Base, at $39 a month or $384 a year on yearly billing. Accept that API, webhooks and CRM access start on Pro at $94 a month.
- You want a 14-day trial with no card, and may buy lead data in the same tool: Instantly Growth, with its 14-day trial and a separate credits plan. Confirm what Unibox and the API do on Growth first.
- Two founders share outreach, or you need CRM sync from day one: lemlist Email at $69 a month ($55 yearly), with unlimited users and HubSpot, Salesforce and Pipedrive integrations. If you add LinkedIn later, Multichannel adds it in the same tool.
Whichever you choose, we think the sequence matters more than the sender. Our guide to cold email sequences that get replies covers how many steps to send. If you would rather not run a sequencer at all, Siela's AI SDR finds and verifies each person's work email and sends from your Gmail, up to 150 emails a day per mailbox, with AI follow-ups in the same thread.
How to choose in one week
Run the decision as a short test instead of reading more comparison pages.
Write down your real numbers
Emails per month, emails per person and new people per month. If 5,000 emails at three per person means about 1,667 people, Instantly Growth's 1,000 uploaded contacts may be the first limit you hit.
Set up authentication first
Add SPF and DKIM to each sending domain. Google requires SPF or DKIM from every sender to Gmail accounts, whatever the volume.
Start one trial with your own sequence
Send a small real campaign from two mailboxes. Check where replies land and whether you can answer them in one place on that plan.
Test the one feature you need
CRM sync, API, A/B testing or team access. If the pricing page is unclear, ask support in writing which plan includes it.
Pay monthly first
Yearly billing saves $84 a year on Smartlead Base (12 × $7), $112.80 on Instantly Growth (12 × $9.40) and $168 on lemlist Email (12 × $14). Switch once the tool has worked for a month.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instantly Growth include Unibox and A/B testing?
Instantly's own pages disagree. On 20 October 2026, the comparison table on its pricing page did not tick Unibox or A/Z testing for Growth. Its plain-text pricing page said Growth includes basic A/Z testing and a preview-only Unibox, with full Unibox replies and full 26-variant testing on Hypergrowth and above. Test both during the free trial if you rely on them.
Is lemlist worth it if I send fewer than 5,000 emails a month?
Only if you need what its Email plan adds. At $69 a month, or $55 on yearly billing, it costs more than Instantly Growth or Smartlead Base, and its smallest tier allows 50,000 emails. In return you get unlimited users and senders, CRM integrations, an API and lemwarm, plus an upgrade path to LinkedIn on Multichannel.
What happens if I need more than 5,000 emails on Instantly?
Instantly's plain-text pricing page says you move up a tier instead of paying an overage charge. The next tier, Hypergrowth, costs $97 a month or $77.60 on yearly billing. Its plan card lists 125,000 emails and 25,000 uploaded contacts, although the comparison table on the same pricing page shows 100,000 emails.
Do Gmail's bulk sender rules apply at under 5,000 emails a month?
The extra bulk-sender rules do not. Google applies them to senders of more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts. Every sender to Gmail must still meet the general requirements, including SPF or DKIM authentication, valid forward and reverse DNS, a TLS connection and a spam rate below 0.3% in Postmaster Tools.
Can two founders share one Instantly, Smartlead or lemlist plan?
lemlist's Email plan lists unlimited users. Instantly's comparison table ticks team member invites only for Hypergrowth, not Growth. Smartlead's pricing pages do not say how many users each plan allows; Smartlead says it prices by send volume and verified lead allowance, not per seat. Check with Smartlead before you plan to share a Base account.
